Rusty the VW Kombi
He is probably the most handsome, rustic gentleman you’ll ever meet.
Rusty was born in Australia in 1961. He is a fully registered, T2 model, 11 window Volkswagen Combi bus. Everyone asks “ Why not restore Rusty and make him all shiny and new” – to which we reply, that’s his charm. He’s original, unique, rare, unrefined, a piece of history that brings back memories to those generations who were lucky enough to have experienced Kombis in a day gone bye. His beauty comes from his imperfections and that’s why we love him.
The history behind his existence is at this stage a little cloudy. We know he sat in a farm shed for over 30 years near Melbourne before being transported to Queensland as a project vehicle for someone. In 2010 the Kombi was purchased by a respected mechanic and bus builder located in Dapto, NSW. The Kombi was rebuilt to NSW roadworthy status and registered in 2012.
Since inheriting this Kombi, I have pulled it apart and made sure it’s metal work and true patina (paint weathering and surface rust) will last for generations to come. It’s taken me approximately two years to restore. This restoration was a delicate process and a real labour of love. He’s got mostly all original fittings inside and out.
Rusty represents old school coolness. A Retro coastal experience at its best, bringing back memories of long summer road trips with the wind in your hair and the sand beneath your feet.
Rusty is a registered 9 seat bus, (seats 7 comfortably including your friendly driver Chris). Retro interior adds a vintage surf feel. He’s the perfect wedding car or to prop a long board next to for a summer loving photo shoot.
Did we mention Rusty comes with a Smile Guarantee. The amount of smiles we get whilst driving around town is something to be witnessed. It’s almost impossible not to crack a smile whilst driving around with us in him.
