Married at the Wollongong Botanic Gardens

Lauren and Rob met almost 5 years ago. They met whilst Lauren was picking up some girlfriends who needed a lift home from a pub in Wollongong. Lauren wasn’t planning to go out that night, but with a little persistent pressure applied by her girlfriends she was coached inside for a quick dance before heading off home.

Wollongong Botanic Gardens Weddings

It was that night she met Rob. After a quick introduction they sat on the sidelines of the dance floor and talked for hours. The conversation was on fire, there were no weird silences, they were totally mesmerized in each others company. They shared their first kiss that night, just before the doors on the pub were about to close at 3am.

Five years later Lauren and Rob were to be married on the lawns at the Wollongong Botanic Gardens, located in Murphys Avenue, Keiraville. Depending on the time of year, there are 8 wedding locations to choose from including the rose garden, the temple garden, middle creek, the gazebo or on the lawn. The fee to hire one of these locations varies depending on the time of year but is generally in the order of $525 / hour for up to 150 guests. There is ample parking available for guests in Murphy’s Avenue. The site can be impacted by rain and wind and it is best to check with the gardens a few days out to make sure all of your bases are covered. Yallah Wool Shed Functions Area

Their reception was held at the Woolshed, Yallah NSW. The function area was styled in vintage bohemian and assembled by owl and pussy cat events.

“We were absolutely amazed at the Yallah Woolshed for our reception. Hannah the coordinator helped us every step of the way. She was always there if We had any questions or needed advice”

Lauren also made a point of how good the food was.

“The food was to die for. It was so fresh and full of flavour. You definitely get your money’s worth when it came to the food. There was plenty of it”

Married at The Sebel Harbourside Kiama

Bride and Groom Holding Hands

Megan and Tom are a unicorn couple. They’re so happy and strong together it’s almost unrealistic.  They’re charm and cheekiness draws you in.  They’re a fun couple and an absolute pleasure to be around. Their wedding day was a lot of fun.

They chose Kiama for their wedding because they both grew up in the area and it’s an easy location for their family and friends to attend. They also wanted their wedding outside and felt that the beautiful grassed area offered at the Sebel Harbourside would suit them perfectly.

Wollongong Lighthouse Wedding

Candice and Ryan’s wedding was casual and cool. Their ceremony was held on the grassy hill next to Wollongong lighthouse. This is where they met each other.

Following their ceremony we went for a drive to MM beach at Port Kembla.  The beach is located next to the Port Kembla steel works and it’s best described as a diamond in the rough.  This beach is spectacular with great surf, a picturesque headland and clean clear water. There’s a great mix of coastal and industrial scenery for your wedding photos all located in the one spot.

1. I highly recommend the Wollongong lighthouse near the cannons to get married. There’s an amazing view to go with an amazing experience.
2. We highly recommend City Beach function centre. The staff went above and beyond for us and provided an A+ service. The night ran flawlessly and the staff put up with my last minute changes.

Married at the Uniting Church, Wollongong CBD

Boho Weddings
Bohemian with an influence from the Amazon, Jaya looked amazing in her Grace Loves Lace wedding dress and ornate headpiece however her two daughters stole the show. They just looked so cool and were super comfortable with their responsibilities on the day. Their feather head pieces caught everyone’s eye and instead of a wicker basket filled with rose petals, Jaya’s flower girls held white dream catchers as they walked down the isle.

“Our vows were different to most weddings, Justin gave my two princesses their own rings as a promise to take care of all three of us and love us forever.”

Rusty Kombi picked Jaya and her bridal party up from their home in Farmborough Heights and chauffeured them to the Uniting Church located in the Crown Street Mall, Wollongong for their 3pm ceremony. Access to the church is from the mall so we drove through the mall and parked directly out the front of the church.

Whilst the ceremony was taking place, we positioned some steel barrels filled with fresh ice and soft drinks around the car. With some coastal chill tunes playing on our car stereo we set the vibe and encouraged the wedding guests to linger outside the church for an hour or so. This gave everyone ample time to celebrate the wedding, take family photos and to congratulate Jaya and Justin on their big achievement.

Following the wedding ceremony we travelled to several Illawarra locations for wedding photos. We even tried to access the Nan Tien Temple however we arrived after 5pm and were unable to drive through the front gate.

Married at the Loxley on Bellbird Hill, Kurrajong

Bohemian Bride and Groom and Rusty Wedding Car
Kathryn and Nick had their hearts set on getting married in the Blue Mountains. They chose to tie the knot at one of the quaintest churches I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting. St Gregory’s Church located on Bells Line Of Road in Kurrajong, is set high on a hill overlooking the Sydney Region. It’s exterior appears weathered and untouched, as if it’s been sitting for centuries. It’s surrounded by native bush lands of the Blue Mountains area.
St Gregory's Church Wedding Kurrajong Blue Mountains Sydney
The priest was a family friend of Kathryn and Nick which made their ceremony that much more intimate. The ceremony they chose wasn’t full of bling or over flashy, it felt earthy, real and was meaningful. It meant something not only to them but also to their friends and family who had made the effort to attend. It was easy to tell both Kat and Nick have a great family network. There was a real buzz in the air and a lot of love in the room. Everyone was very excited to be at their wedding.
Family and Friends Celebrating
The Loxley on Bellbird Hill Wedding Venue is a short 5 minute drive further into the hills. Kat and Nick chose to host their wedding reception there. It offers a bridal chalet and various other rooms for guests. In the morning the sun rises over farm paddocks with the Blue mountains in the background. According to Kat the food was amazing.

“The Loxley has everything you could need”.

The bridal chalet is beautiful and it’s located close to the church. It has a spectacular reception room with a view of the mountains. The venue will only host one wedding at a time, so it’s private.

For some brides this might be hard to believe, but Kat actually purchased the first dress she tried on. Kat and her mother walked into the bridal outlet in St Mary’s one afternoon. Shortly after they had arrived her Mum suggested she try on one of the wedding dresses. Kat loved it and purchased it straight away.

“I learnt that day, mum knows best and sometimes you’ll find your perfect dress where you least expect it”.

Coloured smoke bombs are on point right now. Kats not the first bride I’ve seen use them to spice up their bridal photos either. Bless photography were responsible for the imaginative wedding photos.

“The whole day couldn’t have run more smoothly, many people don’t believe us that there wasn’t one hiccup. We were both relaxed and enjoyed it as much as we could. Our amazing vendors made that happen. These include bless photography, Sierra Blooms Floral Design, Renee from smash n hair and makeup, our dj/mc Scott Phillips and most importantly Rusty Kombi Hire”.

Married at the Quarantine Station, Manly

Kombi Celebrations at the Q Station Sydney NSW
Yoshi and Ellie were married in mid February at Sydney’s heritage listed quarantine station. The Q Station is located at North Head, Manly and accessed through the Sydney Harbour National Park. If you are not familiar with the Q station it’s a historical landmark which holds many clues to Australia’s colonial past. It’s an amazing location for a day trip and a super cool venue that’s definitely worth considering for your wedding day.
Q Station Wedding Ceremony and Reception Bookings
Some days it’s the rain that can impact a wedding ceremony and on other days it’s the wind, for Yoshi and Ellie it was the heat. The midday heat was very intense and although just a short drive from their onsite accommodation to their ceremony location which was held at Quarantine Bay, I still remember the clapping and cheers from Ellie and her bridesmaids sitting in the back seats as I cracked open Rusty’s safari windows to let the cool ocean breezes flow in.
Q Station Manly Wedding Venue For Hire
Yoshi’s mother is Japanese and she flew over especially for the wedding day. She wore a traditional and ornate Japanese kimono which was so tightly wrapped around her body it made it difficult for her to walk. Although she must have been suffering whilst waiting for the family photos in the hot midday sun, she didn’t show it. She had made the effort to fly over from Japan to spend this day with Yoshi and Ellie and she wasn’t going to let a little bit of heat ruin her day. Well neither were Yoshi, Ellie or any of the other guests.
Q Station Manly Sydney Harbour National Park Wedding
The vintage esky I supplied with fresh ice and cold waters were cherished and it didn’t take long for the waters to be replaced with craft beer and champagne. Whilst the bridal party had their photos, i spent my time cracking beer caps and making sure the bridesmaids glasses were full. The afternoon was filled with jokes and laughter. It was a really fun day spent with great people in a first class location with world class scenery. I’ll never forget Yoshi and Ellie’s wedding day!

Married at Terara Riverside Gardens, Nowra

Boho bride and groom cutting their wedding cake
Nikki and Matt were married at Terara Riverside Gardens on 18 March 2017. The week prior to their wedding day the weather was terrible with high winds and lots of rain. There were reports of localised flooding in the area. Rusty and I were bombarded with the bad weather during our drive down to Nowra from Cronulla. The rain was so heavy that rain water started streaming into the kombi through the front pop out safari windows. In heavy rain the safari windows on an old VW bus are well know to leak. The rubber seals are no match for heavy rainfall and it’s all part of the fun. All you can do is carry a towel in the front and try to catch the drips before they land on your leg 🙂

As we arrived to pick up Nikki and her stunning bridesmaids at 2pm the rain started to ease and Nikki made the decision to have her wedding as planned outside on the banks of the Shoalhaven River. The ceremony was at 3pm and as if it had been planned all along, the clouds had parted and rays of sunshine were seen shinning down onto their ceremony.

Rustic Farm Wedding, Kurrajong NSW

Vintage Kombi Hire on the Farm Western Sydney
You know what they say ‘Home is where the heart is’, so why not have your wedding day at home. For some of us this is not an option, especially if your like me and you live in the city suburbs in a small unit. Even if you do live in a house with a big back yard it makes life hard when your wife wants to invite everyone she knows. Is your back yard big enough? She might be inviting her school friends, work colleagues and gym buddies. Not to mention your extended family.

If your home is too small and definitely no wedding venue, I’m sorry because you’re about to turn green with envy.

Farm Wedding Rustic Bride and Groom

We want to introduce you to Josh and Kristina, a happy couple who got hitched on their parents property. The property is in rural Kurrajong, NSW and surrounded by bush land. On the property is a quaint farm house, a large farm shed, some old rustic fences, a few cows and a large water filled dam.

Volkswagen Beetle covered in moss on the farm ceremony

We blog about kombi weddings, and I am a big fan of everything Volkswagen. So to find out Josh and his father are mad Volkswagen enthusiasts, made this wedding very special. Their yard is full of old beetles, bay window busses, car parts and even a rusted out old splitscreen Kombi. I offered a tour of the property. I was in my element.

Wedding banquet and bar tapas rustic wedding

Josh and Kristina spent months planning their wedding. Their dream had come alive. The presentation was on point. Their wedding venue looked amazing.

Rustic Gift Table Wedding Ideas

They thought big but also focused their time on the fine details. The outdoor dinner marquee and dance floor was spectacular. The music played by the live band was super cool. But for me it was the the gift table, old family photos, rustic bench seats and their kelpie ‘red dog’ that stole the show.

Bridal party cheering on the farm in rusty kombi

The wedding ceremony was beautiful and their post ceremony wedding photos were a lot of fun.  We utilised Rusty as a prop for the photos.  At one stage we had the whole bridal party in the kombi and Josh’s favourite tunes playing. The beer and champagne was flowing.  It was time to celebrate.

Old Bar Beach Festival – Rusty Wins an Award

The old bar beach festival 2016 was HUGE! The event hosted an array of attractions including a mega markets, live music, side show rides, pop up bars, food stalls, a surfing competition, fire works display, VW car show and the renowned Kombi cruise. This event holds the Australian record for the most Kombi/Transporter’s gathered in one area at one time and the number of participants is growing every year. The Manning River Times reported there were 249 VW’s entered in this years show and shine sponsored by Shannons and a total of 8 awards up for grabs. Two years ago I made it my goal to enter this event with the intention of winning the coolest rat award. As it seems 2016 brought with it some tough competition, so you can imagine how stoked I was to find out at 3pm in the afternoon that I had won it! It’s a great feeling to have my hard work noticed and Rusty admired. Thank you Kombi Event Hire for sponsoring and presenting this award!

The event is held every year on the October long weekend. Each year we choose to stay at Lani’s on the beach old bar camping. If your interested in joining us for the festival in 2017 we highly recommend you stay here. It’s a great location to watch the fireworks and a short stroll to the surf beaches and festival. If the waves are small you can hear the live music from your tent. Oh, and the best part is you can still have fires. The fire just need to be in a drum that sits at least 400mm off the ground.

Next year i’ll be entering a second bus i’m currently building. It’s a 1970 lowlight kombi with original antarctic white paint on the outside and a fresh white interior with original red basket weave seats. So stay tuned for the big reveal which is due sometime in early 2017;)
