Q Station Wedding Photos

Yoshi and Ellie were married in mid February at Sydney’s heritage listed quarantine station. The Q Station is located at North Head, Manly and accessed through the Sydney Harbour National Park. If you are not familiar with the Q station it’s a historical landmark which holds many clues to Australia’s colonial past. It’s an amazing location for a day trip and a super cool venue that’s definitely worth considering for your wedding day.

Some days it’s the rain that can impact a wedding ceremony and on other days it’s the wind, for Yoshi and Ellie it was the heat. The midday heat was very intense and although just a short drive from their onsite accommodation to their ceremony location which was held at Quarantine Bay, I still remember the clapping and cheers from Ellie and her bridesmaids sitting in the back seats as I cracked open Rusty’s safari windows to let the cool ocean breezes flow in.

Yoshi’s mother is Japanese and she flew over especially for the wedding day. She wore a traditional and ornate Japanese kimono which was so tightly wrapped around her body it made it difficult for her to walk. Although she must have been suffering whilst waiting for the family photos in the hot midday sun, she didn’t show it. She had made the effort to fly over from Japan to spend this day with Yoshi and Ellie and she wasn’t going to let a little bit of heat ruin her day. Well neither were Yoshi, Ellie or any of the other guests.

The vintage esky I supplied with fresh ice and cold waters were cherished and it didn’t take long for the waters to be replaced with craft beer and champagne. Whilst the bridal party had their photos, i spent my time cracking beer caps and making sure the bridesmaids glasses were full. The afternoon was filled with jokes and laughter. It was a really fun day spent with great people in a first class location with world class scenery. I’ll never forget Yoshi and Ellie’s wedding day!

Married at Terara Riverside Gardens

Nikki and Matt were married at Terara Riverside Gardens on 18 March 2017. The week prior to their wedding day the weather was terrible with high winds and lots of rain. There were reports of localised flooding in the area. Rusty and I were bombarded with the bad weather during our drive down to Nowra from Cronulla. The rain was so heavy that rain water started streaming into the kombi through the front pop out safari windows. In heavy rain the safari windows on an old VW bus are well know to leak. The rubber seals are no match for heavy rainfall and it’s all part of the fun. All you can do is carry a towel in the front and try to catch the drips before they land on your leg 🙂

As we arrived to pick up Nikki and her stunning bridesmaids at 2pm the rain started to ease and Nikki made the decision to have her wedding as planned outside on the banks of the Shoalhaven River. The ceremony was at 3pm and as if it had been planned all along, the clouds had parted and rays of sunshine were seen shinning down onto their ceremony.

Farm wedding in Kurrajong NSW

You know what they say ‘Home is where the heart is’, so why not have your wedding day at home. Obviously for some of us this is not an option especially if your like me and you live in the suburbs in a small unit. And even if you do live in a house with a back yard if your wife is planning to invite her school friends, work colleagues, gym acquaintances and extended family your home might not be big enough. If your home isn’t ideally suited as a wedding venue and you’re struggling to find one that is worthy, I’m sorry because you’re about to turn green with envy.

Rusty Kombi Hire would like to introduce to you Josh and Kristina, the happy couple recently married on their parents property in Kurrajong, NSW. Josh and Kristina spent months planning the wedding and quite possibly even longer setting up their venue. Their dream had come alive and the presentation of their wedding venue had been executed perfectly. Not only had they thought big but it was the finer details which i found most stimulating. Yes, the outdoor dance floor with live band was spectacular but for me it was the gift table with old family photos displayed in rustic frames, the rustic bench seats Josh built with his father for the ceremony and their kelpie ‘Red Dog’ that caught my eye and stole the show.

Old Bar Beach Festival – Rusty Wins an Award

The old bar beach festival 2016 was HUGE! The event hosted an array of attractions including a mega markets, live music, side show rides, pop up bars, food stalls, a surfing competition, fire works display, VW car show and the renowned Kombi cruise. This event holds the Australian record for the most Kombi/Transporter’s gathered in one area at one time and the number of participants is growing every year. The Manning River Times reported there were 249 VW’s entered in this years show and shine sponsored by Shannons and a total of 8 awards up for grabs. Two years ago I made it my goal to enter this event with the intention of winning the coolest rat award. As it seems 2016 brought with it some tough competition, so you can imagine how stoked I was to find out at 3pm in the afternoon that I had won it! It’s a great feeling to have my hard work noticed and Rusty admired. Thank you Kombi Event Hire for sponsoring and presenting this award!

The event is held every year on the October long weekend. Each year we choose to stay at Lani’s on the beach old bar camping. If your interested in joining us for the festival in 2017 we highly recommend you stay here. It’s a great location to watch the fireworks and a short stroll to the surf beaches and festival. If the waves are small you can hear the live music from your tent. Oh, and the best part is you can still have fires. The fire just need to be in a drum that sits at least 400mm off the ground.

Next year i’ll be entering a second bus i’m currently building. It’s a 1970 lowlight kombi with original antarctic white paint on the outside and a fresh white interior with original red basket weave seats. So stay tuned for the big reveal which is due sometime in early 2017;)

Wedding Kombi Love

Amy Jane and Steve chose to leave East Kurrajong (Western Sydney) behind in favour of a coastal wedding venue. Their ceremony was set out on the lawns to the south of Sandon Point, Bulli and their reception was held at the Harbour front restaurant. Post wedding ceremony photos were taken around the Sandon Point headland, the Wollongong lighthouse and around Wollongong harbour. We all had fun, it was a beautiful wedding.

The Driftwood Shed

This is the first wedding Rusty and I have done at the Driftwood Shed, and yes we really want to go back! For those of you looking for a wedding venue that isn’t run of the mill, then the driftwood shed maybe the space for you. It’s character filled, charming, clever, simple yet interesting, vintage, rustic and eclectic. In fact there are so many more words that I could use to describe this venue because it really does have so much going on in the one space. The owners have spent years collecting and strategically placing all of their vintage treasures inside the old chicken shed (barn) and its grassy 5 acres surrounds. This place has a rocking cool vibe that will fit in perfectly with your rustic or bohemian theme. The location is beautiful and there is so much to look at an explore, your guests couldn’t possibly be bored. As you can see in the photos, Rusty really does look great at this venue.

Corey’s surprise 30th birthday

Corey grew up around air cooled VW’s, and according to Sarah (Corey’s wife), he has future plans to own a splitscreen bus of his own. Sarah also mentioned that Corey loved the original patina or rat rod style of buses similar to mine which made it easy for me get involved and assist Sarah to plan Corey’s surprise 30th birthday drive. The basic structure of the day involved a surprise pick up at their home followed by a 45 minute cruise through the picturesque Jervis Bay national park to make our destination which was Honeymoon Bay. On the way I offered Corey the opportunity to switch into the drivers seat. After a few early engine stalls and once he shrugged of his nerves Corey was confident enough to drive us all the way up to the picnic spot. The day was overcast and it had been raining during the morning which had left the ground wet and unsuitable to throw a picnic blanket. So what did we do? We set up Corey’s birthday lunch in the back of Rusty;)

Collaboration with Charlize the Label & Sea of Candi Bikini

We were lucky enough to collaborate with Charlize the label and Sea of Candi Bikini to launch their 2016 range of butterfly kaftans, bridal robes, kimonos and ladies swimwear. The weather was sunny and then really wet and then sunny again but that didn’t stop us from setting up some creative scenes and hunting down some beautiful photographs. Everyone agrees the shoot was lots of fun and an overwhelming success!

Children of the earth

AJ accompanied by his two best mates, kicked off their wedding day with an early morning surf at Bulli Beach. It was a picturesque morning with a great sunrise, offshore winds and perfect waves. Whilst AJ was surfing, Sammy was at home getting her hair and makeup done with her bridesmaids by her side. During this morning Sammy and AJ found a calm space to sit and opened an envelope containing a heartfelt letter written by the other. They read out the words aloud for all to hear. The words of each letter brought tears to their eyes. It was a simple gesture that got their emotions flowing and set the scene for their day ahead… It’s probably one of the coolest things I have witnessed on a wedding day. This hard hitting moment was beautifully captured by ripple films.

You may notice from the photos that the weather wasn’t the best, but it didn’t hinder the bride and grooms spirits. In fact it made the photos moody and the coastline look green and lush. Dressed in her expensive and beautiful Rosa Clara wedding dress Sammy made the most of the rain and kicked off her shoes and let her hair down. AJ and the bridal party followed her lead opting for bare feet over shoes and wet hair with a cheers between friends over a glass of champagne and a cold beer. The happiness was contagious and memorable and lives on in their photos and video. The locations chosen by the photographers were coastal, unique, interesting and easily accessed of Lawrence Hargrave Drive between Bald Hill lookout (Stanwell Tops), Coalcliff, Thirroul and Bulli.
